My Favorite Animal: Groundhogs Review
My Favorite Animal: Groundhogs is structured for 4-8 year old readers. It contains clear, simple language coupled with large photographs of groundhogs. It tells the reader just enough information about groundhogs to pique their interest. It is an informative book, but not a particularly engaging one.
My ‘favorite’ fact in My Favorite Animal: Groundhogs were that they were a part of the squirrel family. I don’t know why that surprised me as much as it did, but… it did. And I got a laugh out of “Gardeners find groundhogs to be destructive” because I feel like that is putting it mildly. We have a groundhog that has taken residence near our house, and it’s the bane of our existence during the summer. I’ve actually put in fencing underneath my garden to try to keep him out of it! (PSA: He found a way around it.)
The book does what it sets out to do and would be a good asset to library shelves, but lacks a certain quality that would make me buy it for my child’s home bookshelf.
