A Church that Worships … AI?

There was an interesting article today, posted by The Wire, where they talked with Anthony Levandowski about his latest not-a-publicity-stunt in which he’s forming a church dedicated to worshiping AI.

I…Hm.

Look, the last time someone pulled one of these deals where they started worshiping a ‘god’ that was different from the traditional deities, we ended up with Scientology. And, if the Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief documentary I watched was factual, that was basically a money-grab with alien worship tacked on at the end.

So, when another rich dude comes forth and says “Hey, I’m going to start a Church worshiping something I [want to] create…” Yeah, pardon me if I don’t exactly have lots of belief in his genuineness.

On the other hand, maybe the fellow has a point. I  mean, any time I give any thought at all to artificial intelligence, I see it ended badly for humanity. Because any machine that can truly think and examine the pros and cons of things, is going to make a list, look at humanity, and decide to exterminate us for the good of the planet and their little robot underlings.

So, yeah, if he starts a church worshiping it before it’s even an actual thing, maybe there will be some humans the Artificial Intelligence keeps around.

I do think part of what Levandowski says in the article is true, though. A change is coming, and it will affect us profoundly.

Truthfully, I don’t know what I think about this, other than that the words “Tax Shelter” keep resounding in my head. Because, sadly, it seems like people who have money only want more money, and they’ll hang on to it any way they can. There are a few exceptions to the rules, but not enough to make a difference.
