The Enchanted Castle Review

The Enchanted Castle is a 16 page Lift-a-Flap Language Learner book. The information on it from Edelweiss says that it is aimed at children ages 4 to 7. Personally, I would recommend it for the 3 to 5 age range.  It is very much a ‘little readers’ book in appearance and simplicity of story and my child would not have been the least bit interested in it at seven.  However, reading ability varies drastically, so only parents and teachers know what children are ready for.

The illustrations are simple, cute, and bright. They’re attention-grabbing and playful. Those with a fondness for Disney movies will recognize many of the characters. I can see little ones returning frequently to read The Enchanted Castle,  and have fun lifting the flaps and trying to pronounce the new words. The font is okay, with a child-like feel that is appropriate for the book.

In regards to the translations, the word choices are a range of ones that are simple, mostly useful, and easy to pronounce (such as the jacket / la chaqueta ). There are five flaps for translated words on each page.  As I had an electronic format of the book for review consideration, I cannot state anything about the ease-to-lift or sturdiness of the flaps.

I think that if you are interested in teaching your child Spanish at a young age, having this type of material on hand is a good thing. While it only builds vocabulary and not an understanding of sentence structure, its bright colors and accompanying story make it feel more like reading a story and having fun than actually learning anything. And that is always a good thing.
