CHOMP! Review (Nat Geo Kids)

Chomp!: Fierce Facts about the Bite Force, Crushing Jaws, and Mighty Teeth of Earth’s Champion Chewers

National Geographic Explorer and snake wrangler Dr. Brady Barr has been bitten by a lot of creatures over the years. So this book is born from first hand – er, tooth – experience of getting close to some of the biggest biters in the animal kingdom.

It turns out that there’s a lot more to biting than meets the eye. Physical features and the how (and when and why) an animal bites reveals much about the animal itself. Chomp! highlights an array of awesome creatures with a diversity of chomp styles – from shredders and slicers to grippers and gulpers. Then it shows how tooth type, bite force, jaw shape, and food source all come to together to make each an incredible member of the animal bite force!

Chomp! is actually a book that I would have passed on if it had been entirely my decision. But my 8 year old saw the choices offered and immediately started begging for it. Well, never let it be said that I’ll take a chomp out of her desire to read. (I was a bit afraid she might bite off more than she could chew, but…) So, anyways, I noted our interest to the publisher and hoped for the best.

I was delighted with Chomp! Perhaps even more so than she was. The book is structured in a very clear way. The animals are grouped by the type of biting that they do. There are separate sections for Grippers, Slicers, Crushers, and Gulpers. For each beast featured, there are bite-sized sections called: Meet the Beast, Bite Business, Bite Force, What’s on the Menu, 123 By the Numbers, and Did YOU Know? There are also a few Bite Stories from Brady listed. (And the very first bite story is one you otter read!)

Some of the information in Chomp! we were both familiar with, but that didn’t matter. Because for every fact one of us did know, there were at least 5 more that we didn’t! We enjoyed reading about the Gharials, Tasmanian Devils, Crab Eater Seals, and so much more.  The pictures of the animal skulls were really neat. Some of the Did You Knows had us goggling and chomping at the bit to find out more.

So, for all your younger readers out there that are interested in the animal world, this is something that they can really cut their teeth on.  I recommend Chomp! and so does my kiddo.
